1. Babagwa by Jason Paul Laxamana

Synopsis: An Internet scammer falls in love with a wealthy old maid while trying to swindle her using a fake Facebook profile.

2. David F. by Emmanuel Q. Palo

Synopsis: Black is scientifically the absence of color, but not all who see it is color-blind, figuratively.
David F. weaves three stories that look into the lineage of African-Americans in the Philippines--from American soldiers in the Fil-Am war to the “Amboys” in the former Clark Airfield.
It begins with the Philippine-American war in the early 1900’s when two Filipinos want to get the reward money for capturing David Fagan, the African-American soldier who deserted the U.S. army to join the Filipino revolutionaries. Another thread of the film depicts the life of a Filipina who gives birth to a “colored”baby during the Japanese occupation before the return of General Douglas MacArthur in 1944.
And then in contemporary times, a black gay impersonator in a comedy bar tries to find his father who abandoned them. His father is an African-American soldier based in Clark Air Base in Angeles City.
In the course of history, the “F” in “David F.” may spell different levels of discrimination. But would we also admit that we Filipinos are bigots ourselves?

3. Debosyon by Alvin B. Yapan

Synopsis: Mando, a Bikolano devotee of Ina, Virgin of Peñafrancia, Patroness of Bikolandia, injures himself in the middle of the forest at the foot of the Mayon Volcano. He will be nursed back to health by a mysterious woman, Salome. They will eventually fall in love with each other. But when Mando invites her to come with him to the plains, Salome refuses, saying a curse prohibits her from leaving the forest. Salome holds a secret that will devastate Mando’s love for her. Meanwhile, Mando relies on his devotion to the Virgin of Peñafrancia to lift the curse, making him realize just how inextricably linked are the virtues of love and faith.

4. Instant Mommy by Leo Abaya

Synopsis: Instant Mommy follows the story of Bechayda, a two-months-pregnant wardrobe assistant for TV commercial production. In the fear of losing her Japanese lover and her dreams of a better life, she embarks on a plan that will get herself out of her predicament. Or so she thinks.

5. Nuwebe by Joseph Israel M. Laban

Synopsis: Inspired by the actual story of one of the youngest mothers in Philippine history, “Nuwebe” follows the story of Krista who at the tender age of 9 got pregnant from the sexual abuse perpetrated by her own father. What follows is a story of struggle and renewal. Krista’s story is complex. She refuses to see herself as a victim. Despite her situation, she demonstrates an incredible level of resilience and determination to overcome the trauma of her past. Her mother on the other hand is torn between her love for her child and her love for her husband.

6. Purok 7 by Carlo Obispo 

Synopsis: A countryside dramedy (drama-comedy) that follows 14-year-old Diana and her younger brother who live by themselves after their mother went abroad and their father lived with another woman. Set in a remote purok, where people display positive outlook in life despite daily struggles, the film features the light side of country lifestyle as the main characters take advantage of the fun and thrills of the town festival to take hold of their sweet childhood.

7. Quick Change by Eduardo Roy Jr. 

Synopsis: Dorina believes she is a lady incarcerated inside a male body. She’s got herself a flourishing career, albeit in an illegal cosmetic surgery business. She is a mother figure to Hero, her eight year old nephew. She acts as a devoted wife to Uno. Between her job and her family, Dorina feels that she is one lucky woman. Until Uno falls in love with another tranny (transvestite).

8. Rekorder by Mikhail Red

Synopsis: The film tells the story of a former 1980’s film cameraman who now currently works as a movie pirate operating in present day Manila. He routinely smuggles a digital camcorder into movie theaters in order to illegally record films. One night he records something else... And the footage goes viral.

9. The Diplomat Hotel by Christopher Ad Castillo


Synopsis: Victoria Lansang is a popular news reporter who has been requested to mediate a hostage crisis. And in front of a national television audience, something horribly goes wrong and people are killed while Victoria suffers a mental breakdown. A year later, she’s eager to get back into the game. However, the only assignment she can get is to do a documentary on the last night of The Diplomat Hotel in Baguio City, a crumbling and abandoned building infamously known for its bloody past and its hauntings. Looking for redemption, she arrives there with her crew and they start filming. But as they get deeper into the night, the place starts to exert its will on them and they find out exactly what monstrous evil awaits at The Diplomat Hotel.  By daybreak, their lives will never be the same again.

10. Transit by Hannah Espia

Synopsis: The film begins and ends in an airport during a father and son’s transit flight from Tel Aviv to Manila.  It tells the story of Moises, a Filipino single-dad working as a caregiver in Herzliya, Israel, who comes home to his apartment in Tel Aviv to celebrate his son Joshua’s 4th birthday. Itwas on that day that Moises, together with their Filipino neighbors Janet, and her daughter Yael, find out that the Israeli government is going to deport children of foreign workers.  Afraid of the new law, Moises and Janet decide to hide their children from the immigration police by making them stay inside the house.

5. Sana Dati by Jerrold Tarog

SneakPick peeks into Cinemalaya 2013

SneakPick Indie Films and Stage Plays Philippines attended the opening ceremonies of Cinemalaya 2013. Now on its 9th year with a theme Synergy of the Senses, Cinemalaya remains firm in its commitment "to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldy articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity."

Running up to 04 August 2013 at the CCP, Trinoma, Greenbelt 3 and Alabang Town Center, film enthusiasts could feast on 25 new digital films (5 director's showcase, 10 full-length and 10 short films).

1. Bakaw by Ron Segismundo


Synopsis: "When a child has no choice but to work. We follow a day in the life of a kid who steals at the Navotas fish port."

2. Katapusang Labok by Aiess Athina E. Alonso

Randy, a fisherman, leaves the sea and turns to religion and cockfighting. Then a fellow fisherman invites him to join the fight against coral harvesting. Randy is caught between his devotion and the struggle of the fisher folk."

Despite her father's disapproval, she went on and left for the city. With hopes of realizing her dreams and living a new life, Onang learned that staying was more impossible than leaving."

9. The Houseband's Wife by Paolo O' Hara


Synopsis: "Husband Tonyo and wife Isa, struggling for a better life, were separated when she was forced to work abroad. Tonyo stayed home to take care of the household and their three children.

The family managed to keep in touch through Skype, an Internet-based video call system, where they could go on with their lives as if she was never out of the country. She would see the children to school, check on his husband’s errands and one day, even caught his husband keeping someone else’s “bra” hanging in their closet.

Enraged, the wife vowed she would do the same--sleep with another man--even before hearing the husband’s explanation. After admitting the act to his husband, she discovered that he didn’t cheat after all. Tonyo sidelines in some drag show and uses the bra as costume. Angry and dismayed, Tonyo, vowed to retaliate--sleep with another woman."

Bayanihan para sa Kalinangan Launched



SneakPick Indie Films and Stage Plays Philippines, is a socially-responsive marketing company committed to bring distinct, heart-warming and thought-provoking Filipino stage plays and independent films to everyone. 

Inspired to cultivate and promote culture and arts to the grassroots level, SneakPick seeks able Ka-Bayani advocates to support their banner program Bayanihan para sa Kalinangan which bridges culture advocates from companies, government and the academe to collaborate with creative affiliates or Ka-Linangan partners in giving the underprivileged equal access to experience free of charge, quality Filipino independent films and stage plays. 

Above, at the recent launch of Bayanihan para sa Kalinangan held at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde of the CCP (Dream Theater) were pioneer Ka-linangan partners: Director Dave Cecilio, President of CineCilio Productions, Aya A. LAYANG BILANGGO - Set in a rural milieu, LAYANG BILANGGO is a story about the everyday struggles of abandoned senior citizens living inside the walls of a home for the aged. And as they go through their common routines, by chance, they stumble upon a revelation about an ongoing tragedy of fate between a hired gun and the daughter he abandoned.

WATAWAT - A 90-minute full-length independent digital period film that recounts how the Philippine flag became an emblem of national freedom and how it evolved over the century. Highlighting the contribution of Marcela Agoncillo, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo and Andres Bonifacio, the film traverses through history, retelling tales of bravery and nationalism as Philippine Independence is achieved.

MUSIKO  - An inspirational and educational full length film which depict the value of being a “marching band musician” — his life, struggle, and passion for the love of music.
